NJJM: To what degree do you track employee satisfaction? How do you track it?
KM: As a small office we do not see ourselves as being part of the “big financial machine” that other large financial institutions are. The management team has an open door policy and with regular agency meetings we have a good perception of employee satisfaction.

NJJM: What percentage of employees have you retained? What is your turn-over ratio?
KM: Our 4 year retention ratio is 70% which is higher than the industry average. One measure of the industry average is LIMRA International’s 2005 Agent Producer & Survival Survey of 31 small, midsize and large companies and cites a 13% Retention ratio.
NJJM: Has retaining employees ever hurt the company in terms of hiring newer, more qualified employees?
KM: No. Applicants are stringently reviewed so that we can be certain that they are a good fit for the organization and also we want them to be certain that this career is for them and they will be successful over the long term.

NJJM: What type of investment has your company made into its training program?
SH: Delivery of training to Paychex employees continues to evolve. While instructor-led training remains the foundation of the University of Paychex, nearly 15 percent of the company's program hours are now computer-based. The University of Paychex
is located at the company's corporate headquarters in Rochester, NY.
NJJM: Do you feel colleges and universities are falling short in preparing students for a job with the required training?
SH: Yes. However, most universities do not prepare students to handle payroll issues.

Thirty-one months into their current employment expansion, New Jersey’s private-sector employers are crawling through one of the weakest periods of job growth in more than half a century, an analysis of State employment data shows.
Underscoring this trend, private-sector employment declined by 2,900 jobs in October, dragging down an already anemic job-growth performance, the New Jersey Business & Industry Association found in its analysis of NJ Department of Labor employment data.
